These animals came from high up in the Andes Mountains of South America in Peru, Chile, and Bolivia. In the 1500s the Spanish conquered the Chinca Indians and brought the animal’s fur to Europe as gifts to royalty. Wild animals’ colonies were hunted almost to extinction, during the 1800s.
