Endangered chinchilla breeders may snap a photo or two for use in advertisements.
By the time the governments of Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Peru put restrictions on the hunting these animals it was too late. The population of these rodents decreased greatly. In 1910 Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Peru decreed laws, prohibited the hunting, trapping, and killing these animals, as well as prohibited selling their pelts.

These small rodents received their name from the Spanish who named them after the Chincha Indians. These animals have beautiful dense fur and the Indians used it, and introduce it to the Incas.
