Their personalities form during their first month of age. During this period of life they demand special care and a lot of attention. An ideal age to obtain these animals is ten weeks of age. These rodents make good pets. When obtaining these rodents as pets, it is recommended to check the both parents and the young properly.

There were over a million of these rodents trapped and their pelts shipped to Europe. In the beginning of the 20th century the South American governments passed laws banning the animal’s hunting.
