Chinchillas require lots of exercise. They should be kept in a large cage and have play time in the room. Chins are chewers and may spoil furniture or electric wires, so it's better to allow them an hour or two to run around the bathroom every day.
Chinchillas cannot regulate their body temperature and may die from being too hot. Ideal temperatures are between 45 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit with low humidity. The cage should be kept out of direct sunlight as well as direct draft. A good way to keep the Chinchilla cool is to freeze rocks and place them in the cage.
Never let the Chinchilla into water, because the fur can be ruined. Use water bottles with no-drip valves. Instead of baths Chins use special dust to keep clean. They should be given access to dust bathes 3-4 times a week for 15 minute periods.
Chinchillas are creatures of habit. They like routines and are happy and relaxed when a schedule is established. Chins should be provided with fresh hay cubes several times a week. Cages are cleaned at least once a week. Once a month a cage should be given a thorough scrub down. Provided with proper care Chinchillas can live up to 20 years.
